Specialists for Voice and Swallowing Disorders in DFW | Irving
Difficulty swallowing is a common presenting problem in our patient population. Potential causes can be broken down into problems with the esophagus and problems with the tongue, pharynx, or larynx. Some of the common esophageal disorders include esophagitis from reflux, esophagitis from allergies (eosinophilic esophagitis), strictures (focal areas of narrowing in part of the esophagus, or dysmotility (abnormal muscular contraction of the esophagus). Esophageal masses, either benign or malignant must also be considered as a possibility. In the throat, causes include weakness or paralysis of the musculature of the larynx, throat, or tongue. Benign or malignant masses may also cause difficulty swallowing.
TNE | Transnasal Esophagoscopy
We now have a simple procedure that allows us to inspect the lining of the entire esophagus in a 3-5 minute procedure in the office. Topical anesthesia is applied to the nasal cavity for about 10 minutes. A thin flexible scope is then passed via the nasal cavity and into the esophagus. If there are abnormilities then a biopsy can be peformed. Likewise, if thera are areas of narrowing (stricture) then dilation can easily be performed using a small balloon catheter.
TNE is very quick and convenient compared to traditional upper endoscopy, which requires sedation in an endoscopy center or hospital. TNE is also considerably cheaper.
