We routinely evaluate patients with voice symptoms such as hoarseness, weakness in the voice, loss of ability to sing, or pain with vocalizaiton. Causes of voice disorders include infections, post-nasal drip, benign vocal cord lesions such as cysts, nodules, or polyps. Malignant vocal cord lesions must also be considered for prolonged (> 3 weeks) periods of hoarseness.
We perform laryngoscopy with stroboscopy in the office to assess voice problems. Stroboscopy incorporates a strobe light that matches with the voice pitch to allow accurate visualization of the vibratory movement of the surface of the vocal cord.
