This is a soft palate stiffening procedure for snoring, similar to the pillar procedure. With this procedure, radiofrequency energy is applied to the soft tissues of the palate to cause favorable contraction and stiffening as the tissues heal.
The procedure is performed in the office and takes less than 30 minutes. Topical and local anesthesia are applied to the soft palate. A curved radiofrequency probe is inserted into the muscular layer of the soft palate and radiofrequency energy is applied. This will cause contraction and volumetric reduction that will help eliminate snoring. Afterwards, there will be sore throat for 3-5 days that may require over-the-counter or prescription pain medication. Soft diet or regular diet is resumed as tolerated after the procedure. Anywhere from 1-2 treatment sessions may be necessary.
What are the benefits of the procedure:
RF treatment of palate has been shown to decrease snoring intensity and has bed partner satisfaction rates similar to the pillar procedure. The procedure is less expensive than the pillar procedure, because no implants are used.
What are the risks of the procedure:
There will be a sore throat for several days as stated above. There may be rare instances of swelling, infection or poor wound healing that would require hospitalization or surgery. There may be rare instances of difficulty with speech or swallowing.
Cost of the procedure:
Our cost for this procedure is $750. Insurance plans generally do not cover this procedure.
